Afternoon Tea at Malmaison Leeds

Afternoon tea is a quintessentially British tradition that has been enjoyed for centuries. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon catching up with friends, enjoying some delicious, dainty treats, and sipping on a lovely cuppa, or maybe a glass of fizz.

Located on Swinegate in the heart of Leeds city centre, Malmaison is a luxurious and refined setting in which to enjoy afternoon tea. The hotel is housed in a beautifully restored Victorian building that exudes charm and character, it’s kind of old-world sophistication with a very modern twist. If you’re in Leeds and looking for a place to relax with some afternoon tea, it’s an excellent option. I was so happy to be invited to try the vegan version of the Mal Afternoon Tea, it’s a rare venue that offers a vegan option for this indulgent treat.

When it comes to the goodies, Malmaison does not disappoint. The traditional menu includes a selection of finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam, and a variety of delicate cakes and pastries, all served up on a beautiful slate stand, for that classic afternoon tea aesthetic. My friend and I were feeling particularly decadent, so we upgraded to the champagne afternoon tea for an extra touch of luxury.

The vegan Mal Afternoon Tea options included black bean sliders, a super-cute caprese salad, Thai sticky tofu and sesame wrap, carrot and walnut cake, crunchy chocolate and nut cheesecake, raspberry and coconut slice and of course the essential scone & jam. Everything was beautifully presented and bursting with flavour – oh the joy of a hot scone, fresh out of the oven!

Something that I hadn’t expected was the extensive range of teas that were available, each with its unique flavour and aroma. The tea is brewed to perfection and served in elegant teapots, adding to the overall experience. I went for the ‘Afternoon Darjeeling’ it seemed the obvious choice and in keeping with the theme.

The team in the restaurant were very friendly and polite and were sure to explain the vegan options and checked with the kitchen when needed, which seems simple, but doesn’t always happen. That’s definite tick in the vegan-friendly box.

My friend who enjoyed the Mal Afternoon Tea had a selection of beef sliders, beef and sesame wrap, egg and cress roll, prawn cocktail, a teeny tiny Victoria sponge (so cute) and lots of other sweet treats, one of which was a chocolate ganache filled egg on an edible nest!

The afternoon tea was delicious (definitely upgrade for the fizz!), and the hotel setting was very sophisticated, cloistered away from the hustle and busy of the busy city streets, we could have stayed all day. It really is an ideal venue for a girly catch-up. Neither of us could finish everything, the food may look cute and dainty but it was very filling, so the team gave us little goody boxes so that we could take the rest to enjoy later. My husband and kids were delighted!

Overall, afternoon tea at Malmaison Leeds is a delightful experience that is not to be missed. The elegant surroundings, delicious food and drink, and attentive service make for a memorable afternoon. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just want to treat yourself or someone else, afternoon tea at Malmaison Leeds is an excellent choice.
