The Lake District famously offers some of the finest scenery in all of Britain – from epic lakes to rugged mountain passes. Its spectacular surroundings have fostered a strong tourism infrastructure that enhances rather than overwhelms the natural beauty of the area.

Accommodation

When it comes to places to stay in the Lake District, visitors are spoiled for choice. The key decision is whether you prefer a quaint little village or a slightly larger town with more amenities and connections.

The appeal of village life is the seclusion and peace that many visitors crave. This makes it perfect for romantic breaks, creative retreats, or simply a base for scenic hikes. Small cottages can be found across The Lakes on various holiday letting sites.

On the other hand, staying in a more bustling, though still picturesque, town like Keswick, Ambleside, or Kendal has its advantages. These towns offer excellent access to the region, better public transport, and a wider selection of hotels. They also provide livelier options for nightlife, dining, and attractions such as museums.

Daily Outings

No visit to the Lake District would be complete without embracing the outdoors. The area offers walks and trails for every ability and interest.

For those with children or anyone after a gentle, scenic stroll, Tarn Hows is a perfect choice. This popular spot features a well-maintained circular path and can be completed comfortably in a couple of hours.

If you’re up to something a bit more substantial, consider climbing a peak. Catbells is steep but accessible, and it offers incredible aspects over Keswick, Derwent Water and Borrowdale. It’s also one of the 214 English Peaks classed as ‘Wainwrights’.

Other daytime activities to consider include visiting the Beatrix Potter Museum in Windermere, and exploring Dove Cottage, once home of William Wordsworth, arguably the most influential of the English romantics.

Nightlife

For those staying in larger towns like Ambleside or Windermere, evening entertainment easy to come by. You might enjoy a hearty meal at a traditional pub or treat yourself to a Michelin-starred dining experience –  L’Enclume in Grange Over Sands, or The Cottage In The Wood near Keswick are both exceptional.

If you prefer to stay in for the night, light the fire, make yourself comfortable, and unwind in your accommodation. For those who enjoy interactive entertainment, this could be a good time to binge-watch some TV series, explore some casino games, or play some card games – some quiet yet engaging ways to wind down.

Something for everyone

Any mention of the Lake District quickly conjures up images of misty mountains and sprawling bodies of water. However, this is a varied and diverse destination, which is likely to appeal to young families, singles and hiking enthusiasts equally. To say that The Lakes ‘has something for everyone’ would be an understatement.
