Where to go for tasty fish and chips in Northumberland
Fish and chips always taste better by the coast don’t they? Whether you are a local or holiday maker, you will want to read this post to find out where to go for the tastiest fish and chips in Northumberland.
The inspiration for this post has come from the fact that Monday 5th September was in fact National Fish and Chip Day. Who knew that was a thing?
As soon as I saw this special event, I knew that I needed to shout about the amazing fish and chip shops, takeaways, cafes and restaurants here in Northumberland. Because it really is true what they say: fish and chips taste SO much better by the coast. And Northumberland has over sixty miles of coast to explore, many of which come with dramatic back drops such as Bamburgh Castle and Dunstanburgh.
I can guarantee by the end of this post you will be practically tasting the salty sea air and be feeling hungry; so read on to find the best places to eat fish and chips in Northumberland.
Amble
You really are spoilt for choice in Amble. This harbour village has received a revamp over the last few years and has been transformed into a hub for eating and drinking. With freshly caught fish on the menu, here are a few different places to try.
“Quayside Cafe.”
“Corner Chippy.”
“Harbour Fish Bar”
“Queen’s Plaice” – offering a gluten free menu.
The Jolly Fisherman, Craster
Stepping it up a notch for this recommendation, however The Jolly Fisherman can not be missed off the list. Not so much your fish and chips out of a paper wrapper, yet more a taste of seaside luxury with stunning views over Craster harbour and along the Northumberland Coast to Dunstanburgh Castle and beyond. If you are a foodie, check out their menu paying particular attention to the Craster Kipper.
Carlo's, Alnwick
Located right in the heart of Alnwick, Carlo’s is a popular choice for both holiday makers and locals. You can either takeaway or sit in. I recommend sitting in and heading upstairs for seating with a view over the town. As well as fish and chips, they also offer a delicious range of ice creams.
Seahouses
My personal favourite location for fish and chips in Northumberland, is Seahouses. It brings back so many happy memories of summer holidays spent exploring the toy shops, harbour and beaches. Seahouses offers a few different fish and chip shops with Neptunes Fish Restaurant and Hook Fish and Chips being particular favourites. Take your fish and chips out to the rows of benches over looking the harbour, they taste even better when enjoyed looking out to sea. The seagulls can be pretty greedy however. You have been warned.
The Prior Chippy, Berwick
Berwick is the northernmost town in England and The Prior Chippy offers a varied menu of hot food including fish and chips. This place has been recommended to me on Instagram.
The Harbour View, Seaton Sluice
With views over the North Sea, The Harbour View offers generous portions and tasty fish and chips. In the south of Northumberland as you enter into Tyneside, there is the option to takeaway or sit in the cosy restaurant with fully licensed bar. The Harbour View has also been voted best fish and chip shop in Northumberland!
