KL Malaysia Restaurant, Horsforth
You know when you have a favourite local restaurant? Somewhere that you know you can go, at any point and get great food in lovely surroundings, served by friendly staff and not pay through the nose for it?
I want to tell you about mine!
This is KL Malaysia Restaurant, on Town Street, Horsforth and I think it’s wonderful.
Horsforth Town Street has many bars and restaurants and I think, at the time of writing, I’ve tried them all. KL Malaysia Restaurant really stands out for me, as it’s super-friendly, the food is always delicious, and they cater really well for a vegan/ vegetarian /gluten-free diet.
I’ve been called a picky eater – but I’m not picky, I’ll eat anything vegan, so I’m always delighted when there are multiple vegan options on the menu. KL Malaysia have a vegan version of nearly every dish, it’s heavenly. My husband and friends assure me that the food is just as good for the non-vegans too.
The menu is a really well put together selection of traditional Malaysian food such as Roti Canai (Malaysian flatbread) or Meehoon Goreng (vermicelli and beansprouts) and the ingredients are so fresh to taste. For youngsters who might not enjoy the rich, aromatic sauces or the spicier tastes, there is a kids menu offering simpler dishes with rice, noodles or chips.
Speaking of aromatic sauces, I’d particularly like to recommend the Vegan Beef Rendang (Malaysian curry with roasted creamed coconut, galangal, lemongrass and chilli) and the milder Vegan Masak Kicap, (curry leaves, cinnamon, star anise, and dark soy sauce) although I haven’t had a dish here that I haven’t loved! The layers of flavour and the aromatic sauces are really something else and you get a real kick from the freshness of the ingredients.
My husband always likes to order fish or seafood and I have his personal recommendation of the prawn Char Kuey Tow (thick noodles with soy and chilli). The portion sizes here are so good, I’ve never managed a dessert – I need to make an effort to save some space!
KL Malaysia Restaurant has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere and even though it gets busy on a Saturday evening, I’ve never had the feeling that I’m being rushed. There’s a midweek treat for vegans too, ‘Vegan Wednesday’ which offers a discount of 15% from the vegan menu items.
KL Malaysia Restaurant is the sister restaurant to the award-winning KL Café on Bennett Road in Headingley, I’m looking forward to calling in there at some point.
Opening times for both restaurants are

Tue – 5pm -10pm
Wed – 5pm -10pm
Thu – 5pm -10pm
Fri – 5pm-11pm

If you’re ever in Horsforth I recommend you try KL Malaysia – I hope you love it as much as I do!

Sally
