Our unforgettable stay glamping in a Helicopter

Glamping your thing? If so, then glamping in Yorkshire is where you need to be! If not, then this blog will change your mind.

How would you react rocking up to your glamping stay to find that you were actually going to be sleeping on a helicopter?! Not just any helicopter, a real Sea King rescue helicopter.

That was exactly what happened last weekend when we surprised our son with an overnight stay glamping in Yorkshire in a helicopter. His reaction was priceless. The ultimate childhood dream came true.

Ever since having my little boy, who is always adventure ready, we have been doing glamping holiday breaks. Not wanting to just settle for the same thing over and over I’m always on the look out for memorable experiences and glamping in a helicopter ticked ALL the boxes.

Brand new for 2022 there are 2 Sea King helicopters at Pinewood Park in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The original site for glamping in Yorkshire, Pinewood Park has a selection of glamping accommodation options, some with a Wild West theme, on offer to suit everybody and every budget. Including wagons, tipi pods, cabins as well as traditional camping. This is the only site in the UK however to offer this unique experience.

Remember glamping is glamorous camping. You do still need to take some gear such as bedding. The beauty of glamping however, is that your accommodation is already there. No putting tents up and down in the rain. It’s adventure, with a contingency plan.

There are currently 2 Sea King helicopters ready to book with a third being renovated. The site is the perfect base for families or couples to explore the Yorkshire coast and the North York Moors.

The helicopters are surprisingly spacious with plenty of room for a family to move about in. There is enough space to not feel on top of each other. This was definitely noticed at bed time when putting the baby down was surprisingly easy.

The helicopters are family friendly (not dog friendly I’m afraid), sleeping 5 in a double bed, bunk beds and a single bed.

There is a fridge, kettle, microwave and plug sockets on board with some storage for extras. There is also a fan heater and lamp provided but there is fitted strip lighting inside. As with any glamping stay the temperature can drop in the night so the fan heater was a very welcome addition whilst we snuggled up in our sleeping bags.

Outside there is stepped access off your own private decking area and to the side there is a private roped off raised wooden decking area complete with table and chairs. This you enter through the emergency side door.

There is no toilet on board however the toilet block is situated only 20 m away. There are lots of toilets, sinks, showers and areas for getting changed.

One of the (many) best things in the helicopter is that so many of the original features have been retained. From emergency pull handles, to port holes through to the tail, the warning tape, buttons, knobs, levers and wires. To be fair the whole of the cockpit is pretty much intact which made one little boy (and his daddy) very happy pretending to fly the helicopter around the world.

The Sea King helicopters were used for a variety of roles by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, even being used for war tours including The Falklands. These retired ones in Scarborough were used for such missions and one was even flown by Prince William!

If you didn’t have enough reasons already to book your stay here then this may just tempt you with this claim to fame!
