Do the shake and shack

This week post-shopping we popped in for a takeout treat at Oxford’s new outpost of legendary burger joint Shake Shack.

Shepherd Style

I decided to try their new Al Pastor menu, available at all UK shacks for a limited time from 13th March – 30th May. Al pastor - from the Spanish, "shepherd style", is a preparation of spit-grilled slices of pork originating in the Central Mexican region of Puebla and Mexico City, although today it is a common menu item found in taquerías throughout Mexico.

Loaded

The Al Pastor Burger was a Chilli Cheddar cheeseburger with pineapple, onion and chipotle mayo and the Al Pastor Chicken was chunky chicken breast topped with pineapple, onion and chipotle mayo. We added Chipotle Cheese Fries - crinkle cut fries topped with chipotle cheese sauce, cherry peppers and spring onions, plus kiddos had chicken bites, which were crisp and moreish.

Sweet treats

To accompany, I tried the limited-edition chilli mango shake and the tart pink lemonade. We finished with Union Shack – chocolate custard (ice cream to you and I) with brownie chunks and chocolate toppings, an Sticky toffee – vanilla custard (ice cream again!) with salted caramel sauce and malt powder.

Calorie overloaded, we left sated but reassured in the knowledge Shake Shack uses only the best produce for its takeouts - chicken is British and cage free, pork is family farm raised and beef is 100% Aberdeen Angus – grass fed on Scottish pastures.
