Amazing Outdoor Cinema in The Lake District - The Outdoor Picture Palace at Honister Slate Mine
What I loved about it:
The Outdoor Picture Palace was the perfect way to spend an evening. There was entertainment, food and a fantastic film in the amazing surroundings of Honister Slate Mine to finish it all off. Everything was so well thought out from start to finish.

There’s nothing quite like settling into a dark cinema to watch the newest, most amazing blockbuster with a friend. Something I think a lot of people missed over lockdowns so when outdoor cinemas came along it was a great solution! Well, imagine all of that, in the setting of Honister Slate Mine, the last working mine in The Lake District. There was nothing more dramatic or astounding than outdoor cinema in The Lake District.
I was very grateful to be invited to a showing of Bohemian Rhapsody being put on by The Outdoor Picture Palace at Honister Slate Mine. they had a whole week of films to choose from but I couldn’t resist the opportunity to hear the music of Queen in such an epic film, surrounded by the dramatic mountains around the Honister Pass. Being only a stones-throw away from England’s tallest mountain, Scafell Pike, can you imagine a better setting for Outdoor Cinema in The Lake District?
The Outdoor Picture Palace are the new outdoor cinema in The Lake District but you wouldn’t be able to tell from the running of the whole production. There were people attending the parking, which is limited at the top of Honister Pass, others directing you where to go and plenty of other volunteers ready to help with whatever you need. The whole event was very smooth and efficient, with plenty of room for people to spread out and have their own space to watch the film whilst still being able to see and hear it.
There was the option to hire a deck chair for your visit but we decided to bring our own camping chairs this time. There was also Earthworm Kitchen for food and somewhere to pick up a warm drink as well. You could also bring your own snacks as well. However, we made sure we left room for Earthworm Kitchen food. I’ve eaten there before and they never disappoint! Touring around the North West in their Van and selling great-quality, vegan street food is right up my street. We enjoyed our burger and falafel wrap before the film started and polished it off with a hot chocolate and a beer.
A word of warning watching Outdoor Cinema in The Lake District, bring lots of warm clothes even on a warm day. Up in the mountains, it certainly cools off after the sun sets so I wasn’t the only one to bring my sleeping bag to cosy up under so I could enjoy the film!
Before the film starts there’s the opportunity to watch a selection of films from local filmmakers, and films inspired by the local area, something that really sets The Outdoor Picture Palace aside from other places to watch outdoor cinema in The Lake District.
I spoke to Alex, founder of The Outdoor Picture Palace and he is really passionate about what sets the outdoor cinema in The Lake District from them aside from any other outdoor cinema provider. He Said:
From castles and halls to mountains and lakesides, you are assured a spectacular setting to sit back and watch your favourite films.
The perfect evening activity for couples, friends and families to experience, our outdoor cinema events go beyond the film. With local food vendors and a selection of the regions finest drinks, The Outdoor Picture Palace is a celebration of local produce and brands alongside outdoor cinema in The Lake District.
You can tell this feeling and ideal is carried throughout the whole event, from when you arrive, to the moment you leave.
The event also gives you every opportunity to recycle your waste properly and encourages you to take your litter home if you can. A word of warning for outdoor cinema in The Lake District; the event can only start when it gets dark so be aware that the film may not begin until 10 pm and therefore finish late. We attended in June when the days were at their longest but if you can catch an event in July and August your start time will be a lot earlier.
I think there’s no greater experience of outdoor cinema in The Lake District than watching an amazing film in the beautiful surroundings of the Cumbrian mountains. The whole experience, from start to finish, was an amazing evening watching Outdoor cinema in The Lake District at The Outdoor Picture Palace.
You can catch them on their Instagram, Facebook and book tickets on their website for any outdoor cinema events in The Lake District and Lancashire.
