Harrogate holiday cottage stay - Why Harrogate?
If you are wanting a weekend away in Yorkshire a Harrogate holiday cottage is the perfect place to be.
This traditional Victorian spa town is nestled in the heart of North Yorkshire, surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales national Park, within easy easy grasp of the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Wolds and the North East. It is home to the likes of Bettys, Rudding Park Spa, Slingsby Gin and Valley Gardens, those acclaimed leading lights that draw you to this beautiful town.
Harrogate is the perfect place for a couples getaway or a girls weekend. But also ideal for a family holiday as it’s such a great base location to explore the rest of North Yorkshire. With so much to do on your doorstep you will be wanting to extend your stay in a Harrogate holiday cottage.
With so many options for Harrogate holiday cottages to choose from I’ve saved you a job! Stay with Artists’ Cottages who have 4 properties in Harrogate, all slightly different but all with that cosy, homely feel. All self catering cottages an apartments are dog friendly, child friendly and most importantly very adult friendly.
We had a great start to our February half term as we had a 2 night stay in Artists’ Cottage. The terraced cottage is situated in the centre of town, just a 10 minute walk and you are right in Harrogate town centre. A brilliant location meaning you can leave the car parked up for the day and explore on foot. The beauty of Harrogate is that it isn’t overly big so everything is within easy walking distance. The cottage is also located close to supermarkets, cafes, bars and restaurants. Everything you need is within 5 minutes walk.
The cottage had 2 double bedrooms and slept 4 comfortably. It is in a residential area so very quiet although it is next to the railway line so this was quite noisy in the evening if you aren’t used to it. Not noisy enough to wake the kids but the trains do run all day and evening so it is worth mentioning.
The bedrooms were large doubles and were decorated lovely with a Mediterranean feel, plush bedding, really comfy mattresses and soft sheets. All a necessity when away from home. Definitely got a good nights sleep. The rooms have black out blinds, wardrobe hanging space, drawers, hairdryer and a small desk. Even those suitcase unpacking racks so you don’t get dirty suitcase wheels on the bedding! We were even provided with a travel cot and a high chair (the good ikea ones!) which saved us a lot of hassle bringing our own bulky ones.
On the ground floor there was a good sized bathroom with a bath (a real bonus when you have a baby and saves the sink bath!), a very well equipped kitchen including coffee machine, toaster, oven, full sized fridge and freezer and plenty of cooking equipment (again essential when travelling with a baby). There was a tea tray laid out on the table to great us with ample Yorkshire tea to see me through the weekend, and a pack of shortbread, my favourite!
The living room was cosy, with beautiful artist paint print chairs, a selection of board games, books and vinyl records to play. There was even a log burner but we didn’t need to light this as the cottage was well heated from the central heating. Our eldest had a great time exploring all the books and leaflets and trying to play the board games, not sure he’s quite up to my standard of monopoly yet but he had a good attempt and managed to win his own short version of the game.
The name Artists’ Cottage (the name for the collection which also includes Artists’ Loft, House, Corner and Place) is a lovely sentiment. Each cottage has art work on the walls which is available to buy from the artists. The artists are selected by the owners and a lot depict typical Yorkshire scenes which is lovely to see when you are staying in the cottage and amazing inspiration if you are unfamiliar with the area.
We were greeted by Marie-Therese the owner who gave us the lowdown on the area and the cottage and was a delight to deal with. Before our stay we had a phone call as she wanted me to be aware of the properties hazards for small children. The stairs are steep and open at the bottom which is not ideal for the baby on the go but we were made well aware of this before going to stay. We managed it best we could whilst there but I would probably say for piece of mind that this specific property is not suitable for under 4s. At nearly 1 the babe is very inquisitive, into everything, climbing on everything and there is just not the space in this cottage to do that. The 5 year old however had a whale of a time so definitely fine for 4 plus.
If you are wanting a Yorkshire holiday then I can not recommend a Harrogate holiday cottage enough. Artists’ Cottages, in the heart of Harrogate, with free (on-street) parking, are the place to start. A home from home which is ideal for longer stays, business trips, or just a base for events in the town. There is everything you need for a comfortable stay and you will want for nothing.
Thank you Marie-Therese for our gifted 2 night stay and giving us the chance to explore Harrogate like a true local or tourist.
