My Octane Rent Review: Renting a Tesla in Miami

I’ll admit I booked this one slightly out of curiosity as much as necessity — I’d never driven a Tesla before, and a week in Miami felt like exactly the right low-stakes setting to finally find out what the fuss was about. Octane Rent, an international company also operating out of Dubai, made the whole thing embarrassingly easy to arrange from a UK phone number, which was honestly my biggest worry going in.
Which Tesla, and Why
I went for the Model 3 — sensible, city-friendly, and considerably cheaper than the Model S Plaid, which starts from $200/day and is clearly aimed at people with more confidence than me around 1,020 horsepower. The Cybertruck was also sitting in their Miami fleet, from $310/day, and I regret nothing about not renting something the size of a small building for my first EV experience. The Booking Itself
Same as everything else I’ve read about this company — WhatsApp, a few questions, confirmed same day. The car arrived at my hotel in Brickell fully charged and spotless, which sounds like a low bar until you’ve had a rental turn up half-empty and smelling of the previous renter’s lunch.
Learning to Drive a Tesla, Badly, at First
Autopilot took some getting used to — it’s genuinely good on the highway, considerably less reassuring in Miami’s more chaotic surface streets, and I kept both hands firmly on the wheel regardless of what the dashboard suggested I could get away with. The touchscreen controls everything, which is either brilliant or mildly stressful depending on how quickly you need to find the wipers mid-rainstorm.
Practical Notes
- Charging: Miami’s Supercharger network is genuinely solid, I never had a moment of range anxiety.
- Included mileage: 155 miles per day, which comfortably covered everything from Brickell to Key Biscayne and back with room to spare.
- Insurance and no deposit: both confirmed upfront, nothing sprung on me at pickup.
- Documentation: UK passport, home licence, IDP, credit card. Standard and painless.
Would I Rent a Tesla Again?
Genuinely yes, and specifically through an operator I’d trust to actually maintain an EV fleet properly — an international company with real infrastructure in two markets gave me more confidence than a single local outfit would have. A week with a Model 3 was more than enough to understand the appeal, and Miami turned out to be a lovely, low-pressure place to learn.
