The Pile Fleece Jacket – I Think I’ve Found the Perfect Fleece for Toddlers This Spring

young boy with a flower running in the garden
We’ve been testing out the Pile Fleece Jacket from Polarn O. Pyret, and Luca has definitely been putting it through its paces. It’s been on muddy tractor rides, countless bear hunts, picnics, and even a trip to a tulip picking farm.

Here’s the low down from a mum and toddler who rarely stay indoors.

Quick Verdict

Best for: Active toddlers who are always outdoors
Price: £40
Rating: 4.5/5

In a nutshell:

A really well-made, practical fleece that’s perfect for everyday outdoor use. It’s warm, versatile and holds up well to proper toddler life – the only real downside is the price, especially if you’re buying for more than one child.

First Impressions

Straight away, I loved the colour – a subtle blue that isn’t too in-your-face and works really well with different outfits. It looks simple but well thought out, and the darker blue contrast zip gives it a slightly more stylish finish. The colour is listed as blue / grey, but to me it’s just a nice subtle blue with no hints of grey.

There’s also a colour block version which is a bit more fun – blue, cream, pink and orange – and I really like that option too, especially if you want something a bit funky. I kind of wish they had this option without the pink, as it’s a bit too girly for Luca but I love a colour block!

It feels really good quality – soft but not flimsy, and more structured than your average fleece. It looked exactly as expected when it arrived.

Performance / How It Worked

We’ve reached for this pretty much every time we’ve left the house since we got it. It’s been through muddy days, outdoor adventures and freezing trips out, and it’s held up really well.

It keeps Luca warm on those chillier UK days, and the zip going right up to the top really helps keep the chill out. On warmer days, it’s easy to just leave it open.

Luca is very quick to tell me when he’s cold (“I’m freezing mummy” in his little Yorkshire accent), and we’ve had no complaints so far – even at the tulip farm, which I can confirm was freezing.

I can’t really comment on breathability as I’m not the one wearing it, but we’ve had no issues with him overheating.

Practicality

It’s really easy to throw on and works well for everyday use. We’ve styled it with everything from khaki cargos for outdoor adventures to stripey trousers for softer play days, and it goes with everything.

The front pocket is surprisingly useful – perfect for little bits and bobs. Luca’s used it for toy cars and even filled it with acorns on one of our bear hunts.

Sizing-wise, Luca is almost 3 and we usually go for 2-3 years. This is 2-4 years and comes up slightly bigger, especially in the sleeves, but I actually prefer that as it means we’ll get longer wear out of it and can easily layer up underneath.

Is It Worth the Money?

This is probably the only real downside. At £40, it’s definitely on the pricier side for a fleece – and if you’ve got more than one child to buy for, it does add up.

There’s also no hood, which might be a drawback for some, so I do tend to check the forecast before heading out.

That said, the quality is hard to fault. It washes really well and hasn’t lost any of its softness, and I can see us getting a couple of years out of it. It’s very much one of those pieces you keep, pass down, and get your money’s worth from over time.

Who It’s Best For

This product is ideal for:
Families who spend a lot of time outdoors, active toddlers, and anyone wanting a reliable everyday layer

It may not suit:
Those on a tighter budget or looking for something with a hood built in

Final Verdict

Overall, this is a really practical, well-made fleece that’s perfect for everyday outdoor wear. It’s warm, versatile and durable enough to handle proper toddler life. It’s not the cheapest option, but if you’re outside a lot, it’s definitely one you’ll keep reaching for – and one that should last beyond just one child.
