Afternoon Tea at Ruby’s in Tunbridge Wells: the best vegan and gluten free treats

Afternoon tea at rubys
Ruby’s of London first started in 2010, as a little stall in Greenwich market attended by Ruby herself, offering the most delicious vegan and gluten free treats- and one of the first 100% plant based companies in London.

I am proud to say I have been visiting Ruby’s since the very beginning with my family, and we were so happy when she opened the shop in Tunbridge Wells- closer to home and even more of a reason to enjoy cake on the weekends!

The cafe in Tunbridge Wells is bright, joyful, and holds within it beautiful, carefully crafted vegan and gluten free bakes. The cute pink themed interior really makes you feel like you’re stepping into a happy, special place, and you are always greeted with a smile.

The Afternoon Tea:

When I heard that Ruby was now offering afternoon tea, I knew I had to try it! It can be really tricky to find a good afternoon tea as a vegan; but, having said that, I would recommend Ruby’s to vegans and non-vegans alike if you enjoy quality, lovingly made treats, and like to support female owned, independent businesses like I do.

I was lucky enough to visit for afternoon tea with my mum recently, and it was an amazing experience! We received such a warm welcome, with our table all set up for us when we arrived, in a sunny spot in the cafe with beautiful pink napkins layed out, and shortly after, the fully vegan afternoon tea was brought out…

As part of the afternoon tea at Ruby’s, you are served bottomless tea in a lovely pink teapot (though we opted for hot chocolate as our drink of choice, as we are not big tea lovers!). The hot chocolate was a little luxury; with a rich chocolate flavour and thick vegan cream on top. As for the savoury options, there are cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches, mini sausage rolls and, our favourite of the savoury choices: the freshest tasting mini quiches- tomato and mushroom flavours. Of course, a classic scone each with cream and jam is included- the scones were so light, fluffy and delicious, and, to top it all off: a selection of mini cakes. The cakes were red velvet, rose and pistachio, carrot cake,as well as mini brownies and chocolate cookies.

My personal favourite was the chocolate brownie with raspberry icing on top, and my mum’s was the rose and pistachio cake- there is definitely something that everyone will love! Each cake is beautifully and delicately presented, full of unique flavour- it is clear that the best quality ingredients are used, and that the recipes have been perfected.

My thoughts:

The afternoon tea felt like such a treat and I can honestly say that I loved everything I tried- the experience was definitely the highlight of my week. Each item on the menu was so well crafted, almost like a little piece of art. I think it makes all the difference to your experience knowing the passion and love that has been devoted to making everything. Ruby and all those who work at the shop are so friendly and attentive, and I would absolutely recommend the experience if you are looking for a special afternoon tea in a picturesque cafe.

Ruby’s offer an abundance of vegan and gluten free options, and they also make lovely celebration cakes which I have had the pleasure of trying on multiple occasions. Give them a visit and treat yourself to something delicious whilst supporting a local independent business!
