Luxury in the city: Our night at The Midland Hotel Manchester

What I loved about it:

If you’re from Manchester you’ll know that The Midland Hotel in Manchester is iconic!
It’s one of our grandest buildings (a grade 2 listed building in fact), was opened in 1903 and has since been steeped in glamourous history.
We won a night’s stay here last summer and felt every bit as special as this 4 star hotel, even with a baby in tow!

Everyone! I went with my husband and baby who was under one at the time and were catered for very well. The Midland Hotel would make a very romantic stay but would also be a real treat for friends on a girly night away.

THE HOTEL

The Midland recently treated itself to a £14m revamp whilst retaining its historic architecture and character, which was a great move for such an iconic hotel.
It was built by the Midland Railway Company to accommodate cotton traders travelling from London and wanted somewhere luxurious to stay, and even had a covered walkway leading to Manchester Central Railway Station! This is now known as Manchester Central, or if you’re my age you may know it as the G-MEX.
It’s where Rolls-Royce was famously formed in 1904, an event celebrated with commemorative plaques proudly displayed in the foyer.
The Midland has hosted royalty, celebrities, politicians and everyone in between, and it’s not hard to see why this beautiful, intricately designed mountain of architecture attracts so many guests and visitors.
The revamp included a huge refurbishment of the foyer which is absolutely beautiful – picture a round bar with luscious green tiling, accentuated with gold detailing and surrounded by large trees and botanical soft furnishings. Pretty wicker seating reminds you that the foyer is beneath a large glass atrium ceiling, through which you can see the original patterned brickwork of the hotel walls above.
The renowned Rena Spa is based at The Midland, highly-praised for its holistic treatments – you may recognise photographs of the relaxation pods suspended from the ceiling.
To add even more indulgence, you’ll find multiple award-winning restaurant “The French” by Adam Reid here, which deserves a write-up all of its own for its brilliance.
There’s also the gorgeous Mount Street dining room and bar, and the hotel even has its own tea room!

THE ROOM

Part of the The Midland Hotel’s revamp was the refurbishment of their bedrooms and luxury suites, and with our room, they went with modern elegance that still captures the hotel’s classic charm.
We stayed in a standard room with a king-sized bed and a travel cot for Evie, and despite this being their smallest room it was still spacious enough for the three of us.
It was a hot summer’s day so the air-conditioning was a very welcome feature of our room. It had the usual amenities of a television, desk, telephones, seating and hot drink making facilities. The bathroom felt a little dated in comparison to the room refurbishment, but it was clean, simple and quite large with decent towels and toiletries.
But let’s skip to the good part; the bed. The bed was so comfortable that it was a problem for us – we didn’t want to get out.
After dinner and evening drinks, we decided to have a pamper-session with face masks and films on the bed but it was very difficult to stay awake. It was just so comfy! The next morning we knew we needed to get up to grab our breakfast on time, but it was very difficult to peel ourselves out of that bed.

FOOD AND DRINK

We were brave and managed to leave the bed to head to the buffet breakfast bar which was in an enormous, elegant room.
I love a buffet breakfast so I was in my element here; there was a great variety of choice for both continental and full-English breakfasts and lots of it. We were impressed with the selection of pastries and I particularly enjoyed the smoked salmon and cold cuts on offer.
Evie was thrilled with a croissant and enjoyed having a fuss made over her by the very attentive and pleasant staff.
The evening before, we dined outside of the hotel but did go to the gorgeous Midland Lounge after to enjoy some delicious cocktails and live entertainment – there were musicians playing string covers of popular music and it was relaxing and lovely, especially because we only needed to hop in the lift after to retire to our bedroom.

Getting to stay at this beautiful hotel wasn’t a bad prize! We would fully recommend The Midland Hotel to anyone looking for somewhere grand to stay in Manchester – they even have connecting rooms here which would be great for families.
