Our stay in the Romney Marsh Sheperds Huts

After having our second child just over a year ago, my husband and I have found it difficult to get away together so we were really pleased when we were kindly invited to spend two nights at the Romney Marsh Shepherds Huts in Ashford. Perfect for two, the huts were just the excuse we needed for a romantic short break in Kent.

We arrived on a gorgeous evening, to the bleating of sheep and the sun going down. We parked in the farmyard 100 feet away and made our way through the herd of Romney Ewes and towards the two, gorgeous shepherds huts, perfectly positioned to take in the stunning views of the Kent countryside.

The family of owners Kristina and Paul Boulden, have farmed on the Romney marsh since 1882. Romney Marsh Wools was founded in 2008 and the range includes homewares such as throws, blankets and cushions as well as a range of toiletries, both of which you’ll find in the hut! There is also a beautiful line of clothing ranging from flat caps and baker style caps to scarves, ponchos and moccasins to name just a few.

There are two huts – Rumwold’s Hut and our hut The Lookerer (another name for a shepherd) Heated ready for our arrival, the hut surpassed our expectations. Bespoke built by a local craftsman, Julian, using original 1900’s plans the huts had everything you could need for a short break. The kitchen includes a hob, fridge, kettle and toaster. There is a comfy double bed, fold-out table and chairs and a compact shower and toilet. Outside there is a fire pit perfect for toasting marshmallows! We loved the extra touches; the local wine, DAB radio and especially the hot water bottle.

After popping out for dinner to a local Indian, we came back to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of our accommodation. The fire pit is great if you fancy an evening of stargazing, the vast open skies here are perfect for this. However, we chose to get the log burner going and cosy up inside. We had a peaceful nights sleep in the comfy bed, drifting off to nothing but the sound of the sheep.

In order to explore the local area, a car is recommended. A short drive will get you to Port Lympne Wildlife Reserve or the marmite landscape of Dungeness. We chose to explore the local area on foot; after driving to St Thomas Becket Church in Fairfield, we walked to the nearby village Appledore.
There are also options you can book with your stay including bike hire, photography classes or a jeep safari on the marsh.
We stopped off for a typical pub dinner before heading home. There are lots of great restaurants and pubs nearby or you can opt for delivery to your hut from Kentish Home Feasts, these include a gourmet dinner service, picnic hamper or BBQ box.

All in all the Romney Marsh Shepherds Huts are perfect for an off the grid, no frills, romantic short break. We loved our stay; the peace and tranquility, the comfort and cosiness of the huts, the gorgeous, rugged local area and of course the herd of Romney Ewes who kept us company! Pack your wellies and a map, leave your laptop at home and try them for yourself.
