Hertfordshire's Dog friendly pubs with open fires
After a lovely long walk with the dog there is nothing better than relaxing in a pub with your favourite tipple, warming yourself and your four legged friend in front of an open fire.
Ahhhhhhh, you can just imagine the crackling of the fire, the gentle hum of chatter around the bar, soothing those aching joints in a comfy chair and how nice that first sip feels as it slips down. This is what English winter days are made of.

The Rose & Crown, Sandridge
The pretty village of Sandridge is home to the Rose & Crown, a delightful 400 year old dog friendly village pub located on the doorstep of Heartwood Forest, on the outskirts of St Albans. This award winning pub boasts traditional features including oak beams and an inglenook fireplace and lures locals and those from further afield who come to enjoy the ambiance as well as the fresh cask ales and excellent modern British comfort food
Brocket Arms, Welwn
The Brocket Arms dates back to the 14th century and retains many historical features including the wonderful fireplaces. Located in the picturesque village of Ayot St Lawrence there are plenty of great walks on its doorstep, so there really is no excuse not to drop in for a post dog walk pint,
King Stag, Bushey
A lovely gastro pub in the heart of Bushey village, The King Stag gives a warm welcome to all human and canine guests. Dogs choose from their own doggie menu whilst owners are kept happy with seasonal menu using largely locally sourced produce, plus ales and lager from local suppliers.
The Horns, Datchworth
Another historic inn, The Horns dates back to Henry VIII’s time and still boasts many original Tudor features. Dogs are welcome in the pub or can have a run around in the garden, which backs onto a picturesque and quintessentially English village green. The Horns is a short stroll from Mardley Heath, a large woodland area popular with dog walkers
The Boot, Sarratt
Quintessential country pub The Boot is located on the village green in Sarratt. It is both dog and child friendly with a several play areas in the garden for your little ones to enjoy and dogs welcome both in the garden and in the welcoming bar area with red brick fireplace and plenty of seating.
The Bricklayers Arms, Flaunden
Having won Dining pub of the Year from Britain’s much coveted Good Pub Guide several years in a row, it’s no surprise this pub is a foodies dream, if you don’t believe the guide, take Mark Wahlberg’s word, he said it serves the “best pub food in England”. With the Chess Valley on its doorstep, it’s a great place to head to fuel up after a long dog walk. A log fire welcomes two and four legged guests in the bar.
