Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important part of how we eat and drink, and it’s something we love to see gaining real momentum.

From low-waste kitchens to thoughtful sourcing, the food and drink industry is starting to prove that flavour and environmental responsibility don’t have to be at odds.

So, when we heard about a new beer brewed using freshly harvested hops and surplus ingredients, it felt like a perfect fit for our Food & Drink pages — a great example of how small changes in production can make a meaningful difference, without compromising on taste.

Space Hops

UK craft brewery Beyond Belief Brewing Co. has unveiled Space Hops, a fresh hop pale ale brewed using surplus bread and freshly harvested hops, continuing its mission to reduce food waste without compromising on flavour.

Launched on 2 February, the beer has been created in collaboration with Green Gold Brewing, a leading Slovenian brewery and hop farm. The partnership brings together fresh hops at harvest time with Beyond Belief’s innovative approach to sustainable brewing.

Space Hops delivers a bold, punchy hop character that can only be achieved using fresh hops, while also incorporating surplus bread sourced from Spa supermarkets. By replacing a portion of traditional malted barley with surplus bread, the brewery is able to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of the beer.

“This beer is a great example of what we’re trying to do at Beyond Belief,” said Freddie Ugo, co-founder of Beyond Belief Brewing Co.. “By working with Green Gold and using surplus bread at the same time, we’ve created something that’s both exciting to drink and meaningful in how it’s made.”

Barley production accounts for around 40 per cent of beer’s carbon emissions. In Space Hops, Beyond Belief has replaced 16 per cent of the barley with surplus bread, substantially lowering the product’s impact. In addition, the use of fresh hops removes emissions associated with drying and storing hops, a process that typically accounts for half of the carbon footprint linked to hop use.

Space Hops is available from 2 February directly via beyondbeliefbrewing.co.uk and at Sellar, with further stockists expected to follow.
