A Festive 48 Hours in Exeter at Christmas: Markets, Independent Shopping & Seasonal Magic

Packed with markets, independent shops, cultural highlights and cosy seasonal experiences, Exeter at Christmas is my new go to place to experience all the magic that this time of year brings.
The Spa at St. Sidwell’s Point Leisure Centre
We started our festive escape with total relaxation at The Spa at St Sidwell’s Point Leisure Centre, a calm, modern sanctuary ideal for unwinding, set on the 4th floor of the St Sidwell’s Point Leisure Centre, take in the views of the city, soak in the heated jacuzzi pool or relax on one of the heated tiled beds, sweat it out in one of the steam or saunas, and treat yourself to one of their signature therapies, we had an amazing back treatment with a mud wrap and a dreamy hot stone massage to follow, we literally floated out.
Afterwards, a cute afternoon tea was provided with a choice of delicious sandwiches, scones and cakes. Couldn’t have been a nicer way to start our weekend before we headed off to see the magical sparkle of Exeter at Christmas.

Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market
No trip to Exeter in December is complete without visiting the iconic Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market, which is where we headed to first, with over 100 festive chalets, seasonal food, artisan gifts and handcrafted decorations, it’s one of the most popular & biggest Christmas markets in Devon. The stunning Cathedral Green creates a magical backdrop, and the atmosphere is unbeatable with live music and delicious street food. Entry to the cathedral itself is by donation only during the Christmas period, making it the perfect moment to step inside and admire the breathtaking architecture.

Just a short walk away, we explored Princesshay, beautifully decorated and full of festive cheer. With excellent Christmas shopping, additional market stalls and a lively Christmas bar, it’s one of the best places to experience Exeter Christmas shopping and pick up gifts from both big name brands and local traders.
We continued toward Gandy Street, one of Exeter’s most photographed spots during the festive season. This pretty cobbled street transforms with a dazzling light curtain and atmospheric illuminated wall projections, creating a magical walkway perfect for discovering boutiques, unique gifts and cosy hideaways.
You are spoilt for choice when dining in Exeter as there is every well-known chain with high end such as the Ivy right down to little independent restaurants such as Crave at The Quay that provides honest local food from countryside to coast. Remember to book ahead as Exeter at Christmas is very busy and the restaurants get booked up. We grabbed some of the street food from the chalets where you are spoilt for choice.
The Leonardo Hotel
We headed back to The Leonardo Hotel for the night as we were tired after a relaxing treatment and lots of festive cheer in the market. Everything is within easy walking distance so it was an ideal base for our weekend.
After a lovely buffet breakfast at the hotel, we continued our exploring. A must visit area when visiting Exeter at Christmas is Magdalen Road, known for its incredible independent shops, artisan goods and welcoming cafés. It’s the ideal place to support local businesses while enjoying a slower, more personal shopping experience. Every corner at this time of year is full of festive charm. You will also see the historic Magdalen Cottages, once homes to house the poor.

Next, we wandered through the West Quarter, another highlight of Christmas in Exeter. This colourful part of the city is home to a large selection of independent shops and creative businesses. The standout destination here is McCoys Arcade, an indoor treasure trove of vintage finds, artisan makers, quirky boutiques and small cafés, an essential stop for anyone who loves discovering hidden gems. We had a plant based hot chocolate at the vegan restaurant Sacred Grounds in the arcade. Their food looks insane (one for next time)
Royal Albert Memorial Museum
For a cultural moment, we visited the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM), which offers free entry and is a fantastic addition to any Exeter Christmas itinerary. With beautifully curated exhibitions and local history, it’s a great way to mix festive fun with culture. The city also offers free Red Coat Guided Tours running daily, ideal for learning more about Exeter’s medieval past and exploring the best Christmas viewpoints.
We finished our 48 hours in Exeter with a scenic walk to Exeter Quayside, one of the city’s most picturesque areas. With its historic architecture, waterfront views and independent restaurants, the Quay is the perfect place to end a festive weekend. Whether you stop for lunch or dinner, take photos, feed the birds or simply enjoy the atmosphere, it’s a stunning part of Exeter at Christmas.

With all its festive markets, independent shopping streets, cosy cafés and iconic landmarks, Exeter at Christmas offers everything you need for a magical winter getaway and all within easy walking distance. It’s the perfect destination for anyone looking to experience the very best of Devon during the festive season. There is so much to see we can’t wait to go back and explore more.
