Caravan, camping, and glamping at Humble Bee Farm: A Family Farm Stay for Budding Young Farmers

family cuddling farmed lambs with hay bales and a red tractor in background
We just kick started our caravan season with the most adorable farm stay at Humble Bee Farm Camping & Glamping, in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

Those of you that follow us will know this has been on our Yorkshire wishlist of campsites for well over a year now, mainly because it has a huge wait list for the caravan spots on the actual farm (there are only two!).

So – was it worth the wait? We can hand on heart say yes, absolutely.

Here’s the low down on our 4 night trip, from what we got up to, to things to know before you go…

Exclusive Farm Life: Caravan Stays for Little Farmers

There’s something truly special about staying right on a working farm, and Humble Bee Farm delivers that in spades. With just two caravan pitches on the actual farm, you get a rare chance to wake up to chickens roaming outside your bedroom window, a view of alpacas and sheep in the fields behind the pitches, and the chance to get hands-on with Farmer Percy. Every morning at 9am, campers, glampers, and caravanners all gather outside the chicken coop to greet him, joining him on his morning rounds.

First up is feeding the birds, from guinea fowl to hens, and collecting fresh eggs that are still warm in your hands. Then it’s time for the larger animals: the cutest sheep with the fluffiest wooly faces, two alpacas, two friendly donkeys, and even a miniature Shetland pony (who you can take for a walk… if you can bribe her with biscuits!). Since we visited in March, we were lucky enough to visit the maternity ward and bottle-feed lambs, some only a day or two old. This hands-on experience was truly unique and quickly became one of our morning highlights. The lambs are absolutely adorable – and very hungry! There’s no rush; you can sit, cuddle, and feed them to your heart’s content.

Adding to the charm is a small pond in the middle of the campsite, home to a family of four ducks (mummy, daddy, and two ducklings). I loved watching them take their morning swim each day. Humble Bee Farm is family-run, and the way you’re treated makes you feel like part of one big extended family. With so many repeat visitors and locals dropping by, it’s such a lovely atmosphere to fully immerse yourself in farm life.

All the Comforts of Farm Life: Modern Shower Blocks, Tasty Eats, and Family Fun

Even though you are staying on a working farm, the site is absolutely immaculate. There are two modern, well maintained shower blocks, I’d recommend using the ones near to the glamping pods as they were heated and much warmer.

There’s an on site shop selling all the essentials, including food, s’mores kits, and alcohol. There’s a decent play park for the kids. We didn’t use the park much, even though it was great the kids much preferred chasing the hens and trying to catch them.

The stand out facility for us was The Hive Cafe Bar, this is the main hub of the site where people gather for tasty treats and great drinks. The opening times vary between each season but it was open enough during our stay. They serve breakfast and lunch, and have themed nights like pizza night and pie night. They also serve alcohol, including stunning cocktails. We were lucky enough to sit outside in the sun (yes in March!) and enjoy a drink whilst the kids ran around after the hens. There’s heaters outside and blankets for when it gets chilly.

Star Gazing Domes to Cosy Cottages: Accommodation at Humble Bee Farm

Caravan pitches:

Let’s talk first about the two caravan pitches, they are side by side hard standing pitches opposite the barn. They have electric hook up and water and elsan points nearby. We loved waking up right in the middle of farm life, it can be noisy at night with all the animals, so if this bothers you, take some ear plugs.

Piggy back field camping:

A short 5–10 minute walk across a field brings you to the Piggy Back Field camping area, where my mum and dad stayed. It offers beautiful views over the surrounding countryside, but there are no toilet facilities here – you need to walk back to the main farm site.

There are 10 grass, non-electric tent pitches and 6 hard-standing pitches with 16-amp hook-ups, suitable for caravans, vans, and motorhomes. We enjoyed spending time up here, especially as the kids could run free in the field.

That said, if I had a choice, I probably wouldn’t stay here myself – we preferred being closer to the main site with the facilities. It worked perfectly for my mum and dad, though, and the views really make it a lovely spot.

Glamping accommodation and luxury cottages:

If you don’t have a caravan or tent, or you fancy a bit of luxury, there are plenty of accommodation options to suit every budget. From nomadic yurts with star gazing windows, to premium wigwams with your very own hot tub, we said when we go back we might treat ourselves to one of these – they looked amazing. You can even hire a communal BBQ hut at Humble Bee Farm – it’s proper cosy, all Scandinavian style, so you can enjoy a BBQ whatever the weather! It’s tucked away in a quiet part of the site, perfect for a family get-together, a celebration, a mates’ catch-up, or even a work thing. They can also sort you a locally-sourced BBQ pack – just give them a heads-up if anyone has food intolerances.

Scarborough: The Perfect Day Trip from Humble Bee Farm

We were lucky enough to have some sunshine on our visit, so we visited Scarborough for the day – which is only a short drive away. I’d definitely recommend taking a car to Humble Bee Farm to get about easily, other than the great walks from site, there isn’t loads within walking distance. We did all the classic seaside activities, including hitting the arcades, sharing a bag of chips, and walking along the beach. On our way home we stopped by a favourite local pub of ours, near Cayton Bay. It’s called The Tow Bar and has a great beer garden with a play park for the kids.

If you’re visiting Scarborough and are lucky enough to have some decent weather, I’d recommend Peasholm Park for a day out. It’s an oriental-themed park with stunning streams, magical waterfalls, and mystical gardens. There’s plenty to keep the kids occupied with a boating lake (the pedalos are dragon-themed!), mini golf course, putting green, and seasonal activities including arts and crafts. There’s an onsite café, but to be honest, it’s a perfect park for a picnic.

Top Tips for Your Humble Bee Farm Stay

Here’s our top tips for a top stay:

  • Book well in advance of when you want to stay – spots sell out fast and I’m not just saying that. We booked this trip months ago.
  • Keep an eye out on their social media page for offers; they often share deals on glamping options here.
  • Take clothes suitable for farming – my top picks would be wellies and puddle suits for the kids, and old leggings, walking boots, or wellies for adults. The lambs knocked Luca over a few times, which he thought was hilarious, but I’m glad he was in his puddle suit and not his Sunday best :)!
  • There’s no signal on site. WIFI is charged at £4 a day, which I thought was a bit steep, but needs must, so I paid it. It’s good WIFI and I could keep posting on social media, which is obviously very important to me.
  • Take a car if you can for easy access to Scarborough and Filey.
  • Take ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper – there were some random noises through the night. Considering it’s lambing season, it was probably sheep giving birth, bless them.
  • Fire pits are allowed on site, but you need to purchase the logs from reception. These are £15 but you get loads in.

Our Final Thoughts

What a way to kick off the caravan season! Humble Bee Farm was such a great start to the year – we already can’t wait to go back and are already eyeing up dates for next year. Make sure you’re following us for our next trip at Bolton Abbey CAMC – it’s going to be another adventure!
