Gap years are no small feat. Before doing any planning or preparation, it’s important to define why you’re going and what you want to get out of it.

Do you want to get essential work experience, put some volunteer work under your belt, or simply experience new cultures, learn a new language, and meet new people? Understanding the purpose of your gap year is essential for planning your year abroad effectively.

Most countries require a visa if you’re planning to stay for an extended period of time or if you’re there for work. You may also need certain vaccinations and travel insurances, but as each country is different it’s important that you conduct thorough research into the specific country or countries you are visiting.

Set a Budget and Get Saving

It’s critical that you are able to fund your trip. You need a clear idea of how much money you will need to cover you while you’re away, especially if you don’t plan on engaging in paid work while you’re out there.
