Escape Off the Grid, Canterbury
As we entered the cosy but surprisingly spacious cabin I was drawn to the large window overlooking the Canterbury countryside. This looked like the perfect spot to relax and enjoy my book, something I rarely have time for with the usual hubbub of life.
We were spending the night in Escape Off the Grid, a newly built cabin in Petts Bottom, a Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With no one to bother us other than the occasional pheasant, this was the perfect place to get away from it all. There is even a box to lock away your phone for a complete detox – if you so wish!
Inside the cabin was a comfortable double bed, sat right in front of the large window – positioned for the best view of the sunrise. The kitchen is equipped with a gas stove and kitchen equipment, as well as coffee and tea-making facilities.
There is a focus on sustainability and this has been well thought out. If you are bringing food and drink there is a small electrical cool box which keeps cool for 9 hours so that you can turn it off overnight. There is a compost toilet. The cabin also runs solely off solar power so you’ll have to leave your straighteners (and any other big electrical items) at home.
There is a wood burner for those chilly nights which heats the cabin perfectly. There is something so lovely about being in a cabin, in the middle of the countryside listening to the crackling of the fire and enjoying a good glass of wine – which is exactly how we spent our evening.
Outside you’ll find a fire pit so remember to bring along a blanket and some marshmallows to enjoy whilst you are stargazing. We sat outside during sunset and had the most beautiful coloured sky.
Although we didn’t leave the cabin – it was just too peaceful and relaxing – it is situated perfectly for countryside walks. There are a number of suggestions you can take direct from the cabin. The stunning Wye Nature Reserve is not far if you have the car.
And again, although we decided to cook for ourselves and make the most of the tranquillity of our location there are some great local restaurants nearby. This includes The Duck Inn which was included in the top 50 gastro pubs. There is also the quaint Tadpole Tearooms in Bishopsbourne which can be included as a fuel stop on a long walk from the cabin.
You are also only a short drive from the City of Canterbury which has a variety of restaurants and also tourist attractions to keep you busy. If you are a fan of English wine you’ll also find Simpsons Wine Estate nearby in Barham. Why not take a vineyard tour and bring yourself back some local wine to enjoy that evening?
So whether you are the type of person who likes to be busy when you’re away or you prefer to kick back and chill with a book, Escape Off the Grid offers you the best of both worlds.
We loved our stay in the Escape Off the Grid Canterbury cabin. It was an experience with a difference which provided us just the opportunity we needed to get away from it all in the peace and quiet of the Canterbury countryside. We were able to fully slow down (if only for one day!) and woke up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
